Heat, humidity and bourbon

Here in Virginia, the days have been hot and humid; today going north of 100 degrees. I find I slow down the bourbon consumption when it gets too hot and I'm not sure why that is. I visited a friend earlier in the week and enjoyed a couple of excellent bourbons but then went 4 days without anything. Tonight, I did enjoy a pour of a 1986 JTS Brown 86 proof on my front porch even though it's still about 90 (thankfully the front porch is covered and has ceiling fans). I tend to drink more often from fall through the winter but when summer hits, especially when it gets this hot and steamy, whiskey intake diminishes. I know that various factors can curtail ones appetite for whiskey and I wonder if weather is one of them. It appears it is for me.

  1. In this weather...I move to G&T's, Daquiris made with Mount gay...and really cold beer.

  3. I've been moving towards good rum a lot lately. Ron Atlantico or RL Seale's 10 year old both seem to work fine in the heat.

  4. And do you drink it neat or do you mix? I've had some rums that are good neat but the majority of my rum experience is as a mixer.

  5. Good beer that goes well cold. Lagers, Pilsners, Pale Ales, IPAs. That is where I go when it heats up. However I also love Bourbon. I wait until night. Out west it cools down pretty well. Went out on the patio last night with a bourbon and a cigar around 10 pm when I got in it was actually chilly. 4 roses small batch. Good stuff. I reviewed it today on the blog.

  6. I've noticed the same thing. Above a certain misery threshold, I won't drink whiskey neat. When it's hot, that's a good time for an Old Fashioned.

  7. It was pretty sticky last night so while visiting a friend, we enjoyed a couple Old Weller Antique and Blenheim Ginger Ale. Perfection!

  8. In the summer I switch from drinking my bourbon neat (or with a bit of water) to drinking it with a little branch (aka soft, still water) and an ice cube or two. Or I make a true highball (Bourbon and soda on ice). It's enjoyable and mellow - the perfect thing for a slow summer afternoon.
